Mini Survey

I. Introduction

The smoking problem has been treated as a big issue from many years ago. According to Seal, smoking has caused many diseases such as bronchitis, emphysema, larynx cancer, and pancreatic cancer (1998). Especially, an adolescent smoking is more dangerous than an adult smoking. Moreover, the example of parents and pressure from peers can be reasons for adolescents smoking. Actually, the rate of smoking went up very fast, so cigarettes companies started to produce cigarettes with warnings, and the media also tried to give knowledge about how dangerous cigarettes were. For these reasons, the rate of smoking has gone down.

II. Purpose

Our EAP 1 WW class wanted to find out about basic knowledge about smoking. First we wanted to know male’s smoking rates and female’s smoking rates. Next, we wanted to know about smoker’s smoking behavior and know whether they are addicted or not. Third, we wanted to know from smokers about why they started smoking and we wanted to know from non-smokers about why they thought people started smoking. Finally, we wanted to know about the best way to quit.

III. Hypothesis

I believed male’s smoking rate might be higher than female’s smoking rate, because I saw most smokers were male in front of Faner Hall. Also I believed that they didn’t care about smoking alone or smoking with others, but I think they will smoke in private, because most non-smokers don’t like them to smoke in public. Also I thought they might start smoking due to influence of parents. I believed a program of training was the best way to quit, because it might be hard to quit without other’s help. Actually, I saw many people fail to quit smoking.

IV. Materials

Our survey paper is formed of alternative question of male or female and smokers or not, and we also have multiple choice questions about smoking behavior, reasons for starting, and best way to quit.

V. Methods

We asked forty-three people in Faner Hall and outside of Faner hall. These people were mostly CESL students. Although they were not my friends, I just asked them. I did the survey in the last week during free time. When I did it, I met each person and waited for them to finish filling it out. After the survey we collected survey papers and made statistics of smoking. Even though it is not a survey that many people are participating, it might be pretty similar to whole American's result.

VI. Data

See appendix A

Appendix A

VII. Results.

According to the appendix, 78.9% of smokers were male, while 21.9% of the smokers were female. They usually didn’t care about the places, whether private or public. 66% of smokers responded that they smoked in both places. A small percentage of smokers responded they just smoked alone. 75% of smokers smoke whether they are alone or not. Moreover, 37.5% of smokers answered that they are addicted. Smokers started to smoke due to influence of friends smoking (42.9%) and stress (42.9%). It shows a similar rate to non-smoker’s response. They also thought both of those were the biggest reasons people started smoking. Both, smoker and non-smoker, responded that program of training is the best way to quit smoking (39.5%).

VIII. Conclusions and Discussion

My hypothesis and survey results seem similar with respect to smoking rates, smoking behavior, reason for starting smoking, and best way to quit smoking, but not smoking places. I was really surprised at that result. According to the result, most smokers didn’t care about the place. Even though we just surveyed around Faner Hall, the results were not much different from all of U.S smoker’s survey result.

Home Work For Kids

Have you ever done homework? How do you feel when you got a lot of homework? Nowadays, homework is debated between teacher and student; also “parents don’t like homework any more than their kids do” (Strauss, 2009). According to article, “The Homework Debate” the author said, don’t make your kids do everything alone. When a teacher gives some homework to students, the teacher expects that parents and kids are talking to each other about the homework. Actually, a lot of homework can have bad effects to students. According to “Homework Problems” from University of Michigan Health System (2009), lots of homework may lead students to become tired and give up.

I also have trouble when I got lot of homework at CESL. Although I don’t mind about a less stress, if I got lots of homework I feel that I don’t want to do this and I don’t have a mind to even start. Students should not be given too much homework; also, a teacher should never give homework that students have not ever learned. Parents who also tried to make a good environment for their children can focus on homework.

First of all, does too much homework help elementary students? My answer is ‘no’. According to article “The Homework Debate”, a student who is in third grade of elementary school named Sabrina said two different subjects is okay, but it may not be more than 20 minutes. It means a minimum homework is something she doesn’t mind doing, but lots of homework may not only lead them to give up but may also make a student give up. It does not help them at all. It will make students just get stress, and they will come to hate homework, and even studying. A teacher should not give homework as a stressful thing.

Secondly, sometimes some teachers give homework to students that they haven't taught ever. According to an article “68 percent of the parents surveyed said that teachers use homework to cover material they haven’t had time to teach in class. Only 17 percent of teachers said that is why they assign homework” (Strauss, 2009, para. 13). We can realize that kids do homework that they have not learned ever. It may give a challenge to kids. I think a teacher should not give homework in this way. I think students shouldn't have to do homework that a teacher has not taught.

Finally, parents don’t make their children do everything. It means parents have a duty to care about their children. Parents should make a good environment for their children to focus on their job by turning off the TV when children study. According to the article “Homework Problem" (2009), parents should not help them with everything unless they request it. Children have to learn through doing homework, so if a parent helps with everything, their children may not get everything with it. Also if parents play when their children study, it not only disturbs their child’s attention but also makes them want to play.

In conclusion, homework is an important thing that improves your children’s skill. So, a teacher has to avoid giving lots of homework; also parents should help their kids in a right way. Don’t make them lose self-confidence with homework. Parents and teacher should both help kids to do their assignments.

Summary

According to Anita Singh in her article "Michael Jackson is dead: Did drugs or stress of tour rehearsals kill him?", Michael Jackson wad dead for two possible reasons, that doctor's overused drugs, or Michael Jackson got stress from his concert. The author said ti was a sudden event. A doctor tried to save him, but they couldn't. A doctor tired to medicate, but doctors had medicated him too heavily. This article also said he was dead because of lots of stress. Actually Michael Jackson got lots of stress from his concert. He did rehearsal too many times, so he might not able to stand it. It was a hard thing for a 50-year-old person, but he wanted to do it perfectly on stage. It might have pressured him too Much.

Best Way to Deal With Stress

In Bernard Seal's article " Coping With Stress," he states how stress is related with personality. First, the person who can control the things that give them stress can reduce the bad result of stress. According to Jay Weiss's experiment, self-control rats that got less stress than other helpless rats. For this result, positive and helpful people had less ulceration than passive and helpless people. The author says, the person who can control pain might have an advantage over other people who don't have it. Second, the author states, when people are facing unexpected events they got more stress than people who already know the events will be coming. For example, a pop quiz can be a more stressful thing to students. Finally, the person who has 'stress-resistant personality' can cope with stress. People who have a 'stress-resistant personality' usually enjoy challenges. The author also states that people never facing stress ever, can be bored.
I agree with the author's opinion through some reasons. Positive people might get less stress, people can get stress when people face to unexpected events, and challenging person cope with stress better than others.
First of all, Positive people have less chance to get stress than negative people. Everything can be stressful to negative people, even if it was not a bad event at all. Even if it was a bad event, positive people might solve this event with a calm attitude. If they don't hurry and don't lose control, they can see the way of solution. Positive people might treat a stressful event as a common happening, so they will solve it easily.
Secondly, people can git more stress with unexpected events. If a professor didn't follow a schedule, it will be a stressor to students, because they will not prepare for this. Also people feel nervous about this event. Also it will embarrass people. If they are embarrassed, they will lose willpower and not try to solve the problem.
Third, a challenging person copes with stress well. If they have a relatively 'stress-resistant personality', they will enjoying challenge and cope well when they face stressful events. It can give benefit. They don't get stress from a pop quiz and they are not afraid of hard assignments. If they lose at soccer have or not get a high score, they will not get stress. Challenging person just wants to match with them again until he wins.
In conclusion, positive and helpful people have less stress than passive and helpless people. troublesome events can be less stressful bet unexpected events can be stressful. The person who enjoys challenge or difficult events gets less stress. People can get stress anywhere. It depends on you whether it will be stressful or not. Of you think positively and are not afraid of unexpected events, you will not get stress too much.
